San Diego to transform Hotel Circle building into affordable housing for the unhoused
San Diego, California – The City of San Diego has unveiled plans to convert a building in Hotel Circle into affordable rental apartments for the unhoused, utilizing a $35 million grant from the state’s Home Key project. This ambitious project aims to transform the hotel into 161 affordable rental units, marking a significant step in the city’s efforts to address homelessness and housing affordability.
A Commitment to Housing Solutions
Since 2020, San Diego has successfully renovated five properties to serve similar purposes, including Pacific Village, the Abbott Street Apartments, Path Villas El Cerrito, Kearny Vosta, and Valley Vista. This latest project continues the city’s commitment to creating more affordable housing options for its residents.
City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera emphasized the impact of the Homekey program, stating, “The Homekey program has provided the tremendous opportunity to create affordable homes incredibly fast for San Diegans, meeting the moment of today’s need for housing. This new award shows just how fruitful collaboration between the City, the Housing Commission, and the County can be.”
To further assist residents, the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) has allocated vouchers to help cover rent at this new property. While the city has not yet announced a specific timeline for the renovations, the project represents a hopeful future for many San Diegans in need of stable and affordable housing.
